Welcome to John's Hosting

Home to professional web hosting with the personal touch. Let’s start by breaking down the terms commonly used in hosting.

What is hosting?

Hosting means the place where your website lives so everyone can see it on the Internet. Additionally, it is the place where your emails are typically stored.

On the hosting platform there is a web server that serves your website to your client’s web browser so they can see your website.

You use a web browser to see your website. Common web browser names are Microsoft Internet Explorer; Microsoft Edge; Mozilla Firefox; Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari.

What is a website?

A website is a collection of pages that contain content about you and your brand that can be accessed by your clients. You can have text, pictures and video on each page and collectively that is called your website.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique name for your brand, company or your name that makes it easier for your client’s to find your website and makes it easier for your clients to contact you.

Domain names are registered on a subscription basis, where they need to be renewed every year or two depending on the domain.

Domains come in two parts, the name and something called the TLD or Top Level Domain. For a UK business domain, .co.uk is the TLD.

If your choice of name already exists, you can either change the name slightly until you find one that is not already taken or you can see if there is a compatible TLD that matches what you do. There are vanity domains now that are set up to reflect what type of business you are running, so if you are an accountant you could register myname.accountant.
